Sonia Braun
Bio
Sonia Braun, 1963.
Sonia Braun is an artist - photographer, psychologist and open water swimmer. Her interest in photography began to thrive during her time in rehabilitation after a severe car accident.
For Sonia, photography has the gift of conjuring both the beautiful and the not so beautiful into art, offering an intimate reflection on life. The camera merges with the eye, giving us a new reality to discover. In her images, water is the primordial element. Pulling on memories and swimming alongside them, she looks to vindicate a turbulent past and invites others to reflect on their own past.
She has participated in various workshops in Argentina and abroad.
Her work has been exhibited several times at CCBorges and BAphoto (2018, 2019, 2020), Photo London Live 2020, La Boca Paste up in Buenos Aires (2021) , Galería del Infinito (2022), and Florence Bienal (2023). It is also part of many private collections in Argentina and abroad.
In this moment she is in the process of creating an author’s photo book limited edition of those recent works.
She lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Statement
-I was born blue–
My series began after miraculously surviving a very severe car accident and enduring years of arduous and painful rehabilitation. Art and photography became my refuge. With it, I found a way of transforming both beautiful and painful memories into art. In 2015 after, after my mother passed away, I dropped the first photograph into a pool of water as a metaphorical ritual. It is in its depth where I discovered its therapeutic qualities, both physically and spiritually. Since then, objects linked to memories and family history slowly began to appear in my images leading me to learn and be inspired by other artists and authors that dealt with memory, healing, dreams and trauma.
It’s been important to maintain the formal aspect of my images looking for visual strategies; playing with color, contrast and different water sequences make it so that these memories don’t fade. I aim to evoke empathy and invite viewers to contemplate their own journeys of healing and transformation.
“After water enriched with the most fertile gifts my memories flow.”
